Love Your Job - Helping you to love your job or to find a job you do love.

November 2007

Denise Taylor, Career CoachI'm delighted to send you this newsletter and trust it gets through to you. With so much spam, reputable mailings like mine can get caught up and people may never know they haven't received it.

I've been busy this month, both with clients and business. This month my clients have included a 15 year old student getting started on career guidance before choosing A levels, two men made redundant in their 50s on an outplacement programme, plus many people who are unhappy in their work and want to find something more satisfying.

Within my business I have also decided to be systematic with the way I write on my blog and am now posting each day. I like systems so I'm writing entries each evening ready to post in the morning and have also got a few in stock for those busy days!  Changes are also underway with the website but this will be a long job - still preparing the spec to get quotes for a complete overhaul.

Two articles for you to read this month. The first is all about creating a personal portfolio, a really interesting way of sharing personal achievements at interview. The second is the text of a talk by Steve Jobs which I find inspiring.

In this issue:

I hope you find this issue interesting and a big hello to the 21 new subscribers this month. I've been getting some great feedback on the 10 steps programme so I hope it's been helpful to you. Please get in touch if you have any questions.

That's it for this month, hope you find things of interest and don't forget to visit the blog.

Also, if you are interested in exploring how we could work together we can talk by phone! I do spend a lot of time emailing people as this means we both have copies of what is said, but sometimes it is good to talk. So if you would like to talk let me know and we'll agree a convenient time.  I wrote about our over zealous use of emails in a blog posting earlier which lead on to a few comments on the blog. Emails are great but sometimes it is much better to make a personal connection.

Take care, and talk soon

A Personal Portfolio

Imagine having a portfolio you can share with potential employers and clients which has other people selling your strengths?

Artists have a portfolio, with copies of their work which they can show to potential employers and customers. It’s great, it gives an example of their style and abilities and helps someone make a decision on whether to use them or not.

Models and actors have similar, with pictures of them in different clothes and poses.

For the rest of us, we have our CVs and covering letters, but it is all about us telling other people how great we are. Imagine having a portfolio you can share with potential employers and clients which has other people selling your strengths?

The purpose of a personal portfolio is to substantiate the information you have included your CV.  It includes accomplishments, awards, training certifications, letters of recommendation, performance  reviews, anything that makes you stand out from the rest.

You’ve got to find what you love,’ Steve Jobs

I’ve been having a mega tidy up and have rediscovered the text from an address given to Stanford University students by Steve Jobs of Pixar Animation Studios. He covers 3 areas:

1: Connecting the dots.  He dropped out of university as it was costing his parents a lot of money and he couldn’t see how studying at university was going to help him in his career future. This meant he was free to study what he wanted to rather than what he had to, and looking back the calligraphy course he took was extremely valuable when he and his partner developed the Macintosh computer.

2: Love and loss.  Steve got fired from Apple and rejection wasn’t nice but this led him on to be creative with the freedom of being a beginner rather than an established brand. He also says that you have to love what you do. I agree; you must! Our work takes up so much of our working hours that we need to find something we love. He says you will find it, and I hope you do, but working with a career guide will help!

3: Death. I love the way he says “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life”. I’ve heard other people say that we should live each day as if its our last, and I think this is a fantastic approach – how would you act and treat people if you knew you would never see them again.

This commencement address was delivered on June 12, 2005.  I think this is still relevant today.  You can read it here >>
