A need for personal development at work?

In the Times on Wednesday I read that reforms aimed at preventing another Harold Shipman will see an end to self regulation for doctors and will also include MOTs to see if the doctors are fit to practice. As a psychologist I need to complete CPD (Continual Professional Development) each year to ensure I maintain an effective level of expertise and develop relevant skills. It is easy to get out of date and to lose effectiveness. Other professions also have CPD, but what about for jobs where it is not part of professional practice?

I wonder whether it is useful for everyone to review how they do their job and how they can improve. You could talk to other people and see what you can learn from them, attend a conference or a training course or seek some feedback from your manager or respected colleague.  Not only will this benefit you, but it will also increase your chances of career development within your company. You will have demonstrated that you are interested in your own performance and are keen to improve.
