University choices

I read in the paper that students applying for university are seeking out courses with the best employment prospects.  This seems sensible, as the cost of going to university increases it is important to have value for money and to believe that it is going to benefit you.   The research has put an increase of 25% of students choosing business and admin, 20% increase in finance, 14.7% increase in social work, 12.8% increase in economics, 11.3% increase in chemistry, 12.2% increase in physics and maths up by 10%.

The question I have for these students though is: just because there are good employment prospects in finance, social work or science, is this the right option for you?  Have you thought about where your strengths lie, do you have the right personality to be a social worker, the attention to detail to be an accountant etc? Do take time to know yourself before making a choice that could limit future options. I’ve worked with far too many people who end up on the wrong career path and it is hard to get on the right path if it means returning to study.
