Work your proper hours day - did you?

Last Friday was “Work your proper hours day”. Like many self employed people, my days can be long, but I do not have clients every day. However, most people do go into the work place each day and even though a contract may specify a certain number of hours per day (9 – 5.30 with an hour for lunch), in reality much more is expected. We grab a sandwich at our desk, need to stay late or take work home etc.

The TUC research says that employees are missing out on more than £5 billion in wages for the unpaid overtime which is done, and for someone on the average salary, (not quoted) this is worth £7,000 per year.  We all recognise that at certain times there is a need to put in extra hours, a last minute report is required, or a colleague is ill, but this should be the exception not the norm. Lucky are the civil servants with their flexi sheets and days off in lieu, for far too many people the days are long, with no time to recharge. Is this really making us efficient?
