Will an index linked pension be the main reason we choose a career path?

Sunday, April 29th, 2007

Way back when I first started work a decent pension was the norm and a final salary pension was expected for almost all of us in secure employment. Pensions wasn’t something we gave much thought to, we just expected to retire on 50% of our final salary.

Now, with so many companies closing their schemes to new members (150 last year) our pension future is a lot less certain.  So a company with a decent pension scheme is quite a desirable comanyto work for.

Already people are asking questions at interview to find out about the pension scheme.  I think a decent pension scheme is more desirable than a company car!

Also, some of my clients are begining to think about working in the public  sector, even when a different job would be a better match to their abilities, personality and interests. Is this the best option though? Shoud you rally take a job, for example with the local council, just for the pension in 40 years time, or do you need to look for the best way to take control of your own pension, and so manage your pension as well as your career?
