Are you leisure phobic? Can you chill out?
I’ve just returned from a holiday - I love to get away as its the only time I find it easy to chill, at home there is just too much to do! I don’t think I’m alone in this. I’ve been talking with other busy people and we all agreed that if we have some free time, when other people would just chill out and be - we fill the space but is it doing us any good?
We can rush to fill any gap in our lives, partly because we hate to have things to do, but also to distract us from things we don’t want to think about (on a really personal level I think one reason I did so much part time study was to avoid facing up to my unhappy 1st marriage).
However, having time to chill, with nothing to occupy our time gives us time to gain some energy and to allow our mind to wander. Its good to go slow every once in a while and it can give us time to reflect. We can find mini opportunities such as in the queue at the supermarket, but we can also create opportunities - diarying out half a day, or even an hour to just do nothing. I personally find that walking allows my mind to drift, and also long road journeys, and I had plenty of these in Africa.
Top athletes, will schedule in rest days - rest and recovery is as important as active training, they don’t train hard every day, and we should do the same.
So what about you, are you up for scheduling some time to do nothing? Why not try to spend just 15 minutes a day doing nothing? Let me know how you get on.
