Should you dress for success at interview?
I am always reminding my job search clients to dress well for interview, but recently saw the exception to prove the rule. I have been the psychologist on an assessment centre for a computer company.
There were 8 candidates, 7 wore suits and one wore a sweatshirt and casual trousers. I asked him if he was comfortable and he said he was. The invite letter had told candidates to dress comfortably and he took them at their word. It worked, and he will be offered a job.
It may well have been a real benefit in making him feel comfortable and so doing well, but in most situations you want to be a bit more cautious. it is not necessary to wear a suit, but a shirt and trousers is probably a good middle ground.
