Your dream job, but is it theirs?
My clients come from many different professions. What they share is that, whatever they do - Film Producer, Marketing Director, PR Consultant, Accountant it doesn’t make them happy so they seek a change of career. One of my favourite bands is the Oysterband, and being a drummer in such a band would be many peoples’ dream job.
Lee Partis has been their drummer for many years, but has recently left to pursue a new career path, working as a therapist in the Prison Service. Whilst he has enjoyed the music business he also has a passion for counselling and psychotherapy and is now going to pursue this path.
Many times people will try and make themselves stay in a job as other people think it is wonderful. I remember when I did a lot of overseas consultancy, people used to be quite jealous of my business class travel and the lucrative consultancy rates, but it didn’t make me happy and I was more than willing to forgo the money for a happier and more satisfying life.
A couple of years ago I worked with a client, let’s call him Jim. Jim was Finance Director in a large organisation, on a 6 figure salary, but seeking more meaning in his life. As we discussed his life history he began to remember what he wanted to do before university – to study archaeology. His father has dissuaded him from this path and he had studied for an accountancy career and become very successful. But for him, this wasn’t sufficient and he returned to university as a mature student to follow his dream path.
What about you. Do you have what, to the outside world is considered a dream job, but are unsatisfied? Imagine the feeling to find your ideal job – contact me if you would like to discuss this.Â
