10 Great Green Opportunities

This past week a couple of my clients have asked me about Green careers. Some are obvious like environmental jobs, working in social responsibility positions or the organic food industry. Others can be looking at change from within, such as working for an energy company.   I was really pleased to read a summary on “Green jobs”. More companies are realising that there is profit in these ideas. Their top career areas are:

ü       Sustainability Stewards: Planning and Land Use – this could be working with local government to work towards more sustainable housing and transport.

ü      Green Globetrotters: Travel and Hospitality – I think Ecotourism is a growth area and have noticed the growth on holidays that are more sustainable over the past couple of years.

ü       Complementary Care: Health and Medicine – have you noticed that more people are taking up holistic therapies – acupuncture, aromatherapy, visiting herbalists etc.

ü       Power Pushers: Energy and Renewables – working for green energy companies or major players who seek to be seen as “green” and thus seek to change from within.

ü       Planet Protectors: Legal Careers – When companies are polluting the environment there is a need for law to enforce legislation. Linked to this group can be fund raising and campaigning.

ü       Green Geeks: Information Technology (IT) – all companies make use of IT and you could seek out an organisation in tune with your preferences.

ü       Eco Educators: Green Learning – As the interest in sustainability grows, so there is a need to educate people from within the teaching profession to running short courses.

ü       Better Builders: Design and Construction – As people seek out a more environmentally friendly lifestyle, this can include where they live. People can choose to have houses built that are low energy and companies can seek out to adapt their current buildings. It can also include making recycled roofing etc.

ü       Improving Industry: Corporate Social Responsibility – companies now seek to be more socially responsible and will have a person or team within their company which focuses on corporate social responsibility. It can help to have a law or HR background to get into this area.

ü       Organic Occupations: Food and Farming – this can be from being a hands on farmer, to supporting them via marketing, finance etc.
