Busy lives

Back in the 1980s we were told that in the 21st century we would have lots of leisure time and technology would have taken over many of the tasks we do.

But look at the reality: all of us working long hours and it seems to be getting worse. People leave or are made redundant and we have to pick up their work as they are not replaced.

Being so busy gives you little time to spend being human – we don’t have time for friends or time to relax.

I’m not sure what the answer is, but maybe some times we should say no to excessive work demands and to make sure that we do have time to be, rather than do – I love the saying about us being human beings rather than human doings.

One way of responding to too many demands from our boss who gives us extra jobs to do is to put the decision to him – which is more important x or y, rather than trying to do both.

I think we should also diary time for ourselves, time we can spend chilling out, or dreaming, time for hobbies, or time with friends or family.

What do you really want to make time for?
