Feedback: focus on the positive

I’m noted as being a positive person and I believe in encouraging people what they are doing right rather than labouring the points of what they are doing wrong.

When people come for interview practice, or to get support for preparing a presentation I want to build up their confidence, so I catch what they are doing right and encourage them to do more of it. It was great to get some feedback from a client

“The transformation that you have achieved for me is remarkable. A couple of months ago I was coming out of interviews having failed completely to get my points across. With your help I have learned how to prepare myself, focus on the interviewers’ questions and ensure that I communicate all the important facts concisely and effectively.

You have also provided the all-important boost to my self confidence, by spotting and building upon what I did well, as well as acknowledging my weaknesses with constructive, practical tips to overcome them”.

I’m reminded to mention this today after reading a blog entry from the Reluctant Presenters Guide. It’s an interesting posting and I recommend that you read it.

Part of it describes when he got feedback on his presentational skills.  He was given feedback about the way he kept on saying umm at the end of each sentence. Useful feedback but it made him focus on it even more. Better to have been told to pause at the end of each sentence.  So my suggestion for you to think of today – next time someone asks for feedback, focus on the positive.
