Should you work with your partner?

My husband and I are considering working together. It’s a big step, bringing someone else into a business and also seeing someone in the job and in the home. Would this the right career choice for you?

PR moments have written an interesting article on this in the weeks ‘behind the headline’. Their article includes case studies on 2 couples who work together and also some top tips.

Top tips on how to have a relationship at work:

 Things to do:

1. Hone your listening skills

2. Get things off your chest quickly – say what you have to say and get on with it

3. Try to gauge when it is the right time to bring business into your personal time – and vice versa, because it will definitely happen, and know when to shut up about work

4. Be humble when you are learning from your partner and don’t be arrogant when helping them in return

5. Try to remain friends even when the shit hits the fan

Things not to do:

1. Don’t get hangovers on the same day!

2. Don’t think what works in business works at home – and vice-versa

3. Try not to use violence in the workplace!

4. Keep your arguments to yourselves

5. Don’t, whatever you do, forget your sense of humour
