Just received this email from a client.
I’m so pleased I got in touch with you and took the Highlands Ability Battery and the Strong Interest Inventory.
The Highlands results have explained a lot of things for me, including why I’ve been going round in circles on my career ideas for so long. I could do such a diverse range of jobs that picking just one is difficult!
Pretty much all the jobs we discussed yesterday I have thought about at one time or another but some, like Interior Design, I had dismissed out of hand because I didn’t think I was “creative” enough.
Our session has encouraged me to think differently. Whatever I end up choosing to do as a career, I also now have some ideas for hobbies I could take up which is an added bonus!

I had been deviating a bit from my plan – not by much but having more wine and carbs than I used to. I want to get to the magic 100 (150) so this week I have been 100% focused. Absolutely no carbs outside of what is naturally occuring in veggies and fruit. I have also logged EVERYTHING I eat and eaten at 3 hourly intervals, planning in advance what to eat. I’ve also been working even harder at the gym.
This morning I’ve got on the scales and my weight loss since last week is 5lb. I’m now at 13 stone 5lb, but looking a lot lighter as I have a lot of muscle.
I have planned for alcohol this weekend. A glass of champagne on Saturday and more on Sunday as it is my parents in laws 60th wedding anniversary, and our anniversary but this will be controlled drinking, and will eat as clean as possible, although I plan to eat one slice of tiger bread on Sunday. There’s something about tiger bread!
41 weeks, 78lb weight loss since 9th October
5 weeks to my birthday; 11 weeks to one year of taking control of my health

The Open University has reported that the number of 18-21 year olds starting degrees with the OU is up 17% on the previous academic year. 25% of new OU students are under 25.
This method of study means you can study part time alongside a job and you are unlikely to get into high levels of debt.
I have gained all my qualifications part time, and did my first degree from 1981-88 whilst building a career within Royal Mail. Back then it was 6 years for an ordinary degree and 8 years for an honours degree, and studying for 12 hours a week meant it would take 6 or 8 years. you can now get an honours degree in 6 years.
I was working full time so 12 hours of study was all I could manage, but if you were working part time you could do 2 courses a year and still get a degree in 3 years, with no debt and 3 years of work experience.
I highly recommend the OU having gained both my first degree in psychology and my MBA with them. There are of course other options including Birkbeck College, University of London. I did my MSc in Occupational Psychology via their distance learning course which was mainly study from home but we met up for a weekend once a term. There was also the night school option for those who were able to attend 2 evenings a week.
The benefits of an OU degree
- you can pay as you go so don’t build up a lot of debt
- you can work part time and live from home
- employers love the way you demonstrate great time management skills
- study and work can enhance each other, so you are more likely to get promoted
What do you think about part time study? Have you done it? Would you?

Love Your Job – Helping you to love your job or to find a job you do love – July Newsletter
Hi all
It’s July and I’m happy – listening to some great music (Frank Turner), the sun is shining, just back from the gym and working on some interesting topics. I’m not always as happy as this and in the past I’ve had serious bouts of depression, but thankfully not for a long time.
Depression is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign that you have been trying to be strong for too long. It’s mental health week and 1 in 3 of us will suffer, at some point in our lives.
I’m always conscious of times I may slip so I look after myself, have people who love me and have learnt ways of coping with the things that can pull me down, which included having in-depth counselling to address things in my past.
We never know what the future may bring, however healthy we are things can strike us down, so I try and strike a balance between sensible plans for the future and living for the moment. I enjoyed the film The Bucket List recently which has Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman write a joint ‘bucket list’, what they want to experience before they kick the bucket and then go about doing the things on their list.
I personally think that a list is not just about travelling to places and e.g. going sky diving but also thinking about what you can do for others, the memories you leave behind. not just big things, but the smaller things too. It’s those things we remember when someone is gone.
I’m now a director of ZoomInterviews and will be telling you more details as the company develops it’s UK presence. In the meantime I’m looking for some help from ex military people (UK based) so if you fit the bill, or know someone who does can you contact me.

Feedback from 3 career coaching clients.
Thank you very much for our meeting on Friday and your feedback and advice. I feel that my abilities have been defined and acknowledged properly for the first time, which is down to you, and it gives me something structured to use to make a statement to myself about me, which is great. I feel you explained it in a very balanced and accepting way, although I’m wrestling with the idea of being introverted because I’ve always been encouraged by my parents to fight against that aspect of myself, even to conquer it, so I am going to have to I have a bit of work to do on/with myself in this area to stop me from feeling it is a negative trait and deal with it better. It was very helpful to hear your own personal experience of it, as I don’t think I’ve ever discussed it constructively with anyone. Heather, Marketing Manager.
‘I found the Highlands generated very precise insights into the way I perceive information & the reasons I approach tasks the way I do’ Tom, Editor
After months spent trawling through career websites and fruitless research, I finally took action and invested in Denise’s Silver Plus Programme. Denise systematically focussed my abilities and interests through a number of psychometric tests, the results of which were explained thoroughly to me. I now know where my abilities lie and in which direction I should be heading in. As a graduate it is sometimes very difficult to know what kinds of jobs are available and it is all too easy to take the wrong path. After working with Denise my confidence has soared and now I can really focus on my applications with the knowledge that this career path is the right one for me. Thank you for all your help Denise. Dear Denise
I cannot speak highly enough of the combination of assessments that you provide on the gold programme as pieced together they provide an amazing insight. This, mixed with your knowledgeable, helpful and patient coaching is a potent mixture for instigating change.
For the first time I feel assertive about who I am at work and, importantly, who and what I am not. I feel confident in my abilities and released from the need to be anything other than myself in defining and enjoying my future career.
It took me over a year to take the step of booking my sessions with you and I can’t speak more highly of the tailored support you offer. You have enabled me to move from a jumble of thoughts and complete lack of career clarity to discovering more about what I’d like to spend my time doing. I wish I’d done this ten years ago!
The structured approach you provide will be of use throughout my career and you have given me tools to take a step-by-step approach to taking action. Your personable and empathetic approach is invaluable, and I appreciated your help in my progress through the programme.
Thank you so much for our sessions. Whilst technically I’ve finished the gold programme the self knowledge and skills I have gained is continuing to help define me in more of my life than solely my career. The assessments have clarified my abilities, career interests and character and helped me understand myself more profoundly than I’d anticipated.
I will continue to recommend you to my friends, and I will not hesitate to ask for your support should I need further career-related advice or support in the future.
Best wishes
Colette

It’s now 31 weeks since I committed to getting fit and healthy, and for a couple of weeks I tried out eating more, and having a glass of wine at night, and the weight loss dropped.
This was for a couple of reasons – I’d followed carefully everything my personal trainer had said but for the past 8 weeks he has been off ill and I felt a bit abandoned, no longer having him carefully monitoring food and advising re nutritional supplements. But also 6 months is a long time to follow a plan and it did me good to eat a little differently, and I was still losing at least a pound a week.
I’m still working out and got a brilliant inspirational trainer called Emma.
Today I got on the scales and have lost 3lb this week, a total of 8lb in 5 weeks and my overall loss is 66lb since October, only 4 lb short of 5stone and a target – to be at this by the end of the month latest.
From my very biggest I am down by well over 8stone – 116lb!
31 weeks, 66lb loss
If I lose another 40lbs I will literally be half the woman I was – will I do it? it will take time, but yes I will!

6 months! It’s a long time to have been following my plan, but the weight took a long time to put on.
I got on the scales this morning and a 2lb loss this week making it a 58lb (4 stone 2lb) total since committing to a new way of eating and living back in October. I’ve also got 3 stone to go to the magic 100lb loss (which will be a 150lb from my very heaviest). I should get there this side of Christmas.
I’ve written about my personal trainer, Ben, and how helpful he has been in refocusing my diet and his approach to exercise, but poor Ben is quite ill, and for the past 3 weeks has been unavailable, and I don’t know when he’s coming back. I’ve now got myself a new personal trainer, Emma, who has a different approach to Ben but I don’t think that’s a bad thing, good to give my body a bit of a shake up. So now I’m doing more cardio and sweating a heck of a lot more. Still using weights, but also moving fast and some of it is pretty hard going, swinging an 8kg medicine ball with lifts and squats. also doing brand new exercises such as the jack knife. Doing an exercise I’ve never done before is so weird, and my body struggled, but by the second day I was already better.
I’ve been keeping my new clothes shopping to the minimum, I have 2 dresses I wear for work, but my casual trousers were too big, so had to look for something new. It was great to go into Next and all their size 18 trousers fitted, no need to breathe in to get the zip up, but I knew these would soon get baggy, so instead bought some cheaper ones, which I’ll be happier to dispose of in a couple of months.
I’m seeing Emma later today and she’ll be measuring me, so I’ll add an update later.
UPDATE
Emma checked my measurements and it’s a great month:here is the monthly loss of cm, along with the total in 6 months
Bust, dropped 1cm, total loss is 22.3cm
Right bicep: 3.9cm drop – 6.9cm
Waist, dropped 6.7cm, total loss is 24.2 cm
Hips dropped 4 cm, total loss is 24.5cm
