Over 60 and looking for work

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010
I was on Pete Price’s radio show (Radio City, Liverpool station) on Monday night talking about what advice I’d give to older people who are looking for work due to the pension crisis.
Sometimes it is about asking people questions to get them thinking, so if you are having to go back to work, or can’t retire due to poor pension outlooks you may like to think about:
·         What would I like to do? You could of course do more of the same, but what you have been doing may bore you, stress you, or you are not in the right fitness level to do it well. And of course it could be that you just can’t get the job doing what you used to do anymore.
·         I think as we get older we have to take account of our health, in our 60s we may no longer be able to do a physical job.
·         What can you see yourself doing in 5 or 10 years time? If you are going to have to work for a considerable number of years then you may as well aim for something you will enjoy and that you can continue to do over the years.
·         How much money do you need, maybe you need some to supplement your pension but I is less about the money and more about keeping your mind active and meeting people and for some it gives them a sense of purpose.
There are other factors to consider, such as the cost of getting to work, having to buy clothes specifically for the job and what you may be giving up such as less chance of taking last minute cheap holidays, and less time with grandchildren.

Getting ready for retirement

Thursday, February 18th, 2010
I’d like to talk about retirement, some people have no choice but to carry on working beyond 60 or 65 but will it be the same work that they did before?
I’m working with one client, let’s call her Helen and she plans to move away from what she has been doing to something new. She is also going to change locations. So there is going to be a lot of change.
When I used to run Pre-Retirement Courses I’d discuss with people that it was best not to make too many changes at once and also to give careful thought before moving to the seaside or the country, away from people you know.
Helen plans to move near family so she will have people close to her that she knows, but she will be moving away from her friends, people she has known for years.
So there will be feelings of loss in 2 ways – leaving behind the job she has done for 25 years and also friendships and the organisations she belonged to.
Helen has planned a sensible approach. To move to part time working for 6 months so she can gradually move away from the job, and then to have some new ideas she can pursue to enable her to continue to work part time once she makes the move.
I do think that retirement preparation is important covering a range of areas, from finances to family to interests.
It’s also thinking about what is right for you. What sort of retirement do you want to have, how much time do you want, and perhaps need, to spend at work but also how else do you want to spend your time.
It can be easy to fill your time with ‘good work’ and there are plenty of people and organisations who will want you to help them, but also think about time to do some of the things you never had time to do before.
Maybe you will find it helpful to think about the retirement you want and then you can make sure you get it.
Can I help? Don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Retirement – looking forward or putting it on hold

Saturday, September 20th, 2008

I was listening to Sir Stuart Rose on Radio 4 this morning. He’s the chairman at Marks & Spencer.

The interviewer asked him about retirement.  He replied that he doesn’t believe in retirement, while he still has the energy he wants to stay around.

For every person out there who counts the days off till retirement, there are others who love their job and want to continue in work as long as they can as they get energised through their work.

Imagine loving your job so much you want to continue as long as you can?

Approaching retirement

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

You could spend 30+ years in retirement, what sort of retirement do you want to have?

Retirement is one of the most difficult life adjustments adults make. A recent survey showed that 41% of those who recently retired didn’t want to settle for a typical retirement. They still want the challenge of work, and the feeling of accomplishment that came with the job. Let me help you to find out the right career option and life style options for you that meets your needs and utilises your natural talents and abilities.

Many people have reached the company retirement age but are not yet ready to stop working.  What are you going to do next?  You could stack shelves in the supermarket? Do voluntary work? Or perhaps you have some dreams you still want to achieve.

You may have sufficient money so you don’t need to work, but having been a bit of a workaholic are wondering whether playing golf and household chores will be enough. A number of clients opt to take the Highlands Ability Battery.  Not only to help think around work options but also for developing new hobbies and interests in music, arts, genealogy etc.

Or perhaps you never did get around to investing for the future and you need to earn just to pay the bills?

Take some time to plan the rest of your life, and explore paid work and other interests.

The Highlands Ability Battery can be very helpful for this next stage of your life, and can help you to consider what you want to do forpaid work and other activities. I remember discussing this with someone of about your age and he said that the results really helped to make sense of his past and was helpful for the future.

I’d be very happy to chat with you about this, and you may also like to have a trial go read more about the highlands ability battery at http://www.amazingpeople.co.uk/highlandsabilitybattery.htm
