Hi Blay, thanks for replying. Let me see how I can provide information relevant for you. If you are over qualified you can approach recruiters more from the 'look at all the extras you get from me..' but you need to also convince them that you won't be off as soon as something better comes along.

Again I think the direct approach can be the way to go and also to look for ways to stand out such as creating a summary of what you see as the problems in a job and how you would overcome these. This can work for all types of jobs.

I've got a chapter in section 5 of my book - How to get a job in a recession 'Try something new' which cold be helpful.

All the best, Denise

Hi Lisa

I hate the way that companies take this approach, this is why I suggest people contact companies direct so they don't get stuck in this process. You are right the click to apply and off goes your CV means that people don't think through how to target their CV at the particular job.

Even getting all the key words into your CV may not be enough, I hear of times when there are so many people who match the criteria that the choice of who to interview is literally a lottery.

I intend to write an article aimed at recruiters but it's unlikely to make much imapact.

It seems a shame that companies have to use such robotic ways to sift through numerous cv's. I feel the personality and unique qualities of a potential employee are lost somewhat.

I wonder why so many cv's are inappropriate in the first place and that maybe the method of generating such an influx of applications needs rethinking initially rather than increased spending on more sophisticated software sorting programs.

Thanks for the email Denise. However, I'm sure my problem is not my CV. What you point to is good advice but not all your readers are sales managers. Like what I suspect is a growing army of job seekers, I'm absurdly over-qualified for any available positions. Whether that's detected by key-word search or later in the process, there's no way around it.

Thanks Ian, good to hear that you are keen on personal development too. I was working with a client the other day who hasn't done any persoal develoment for over 10 years as their company doesn'r beliwve in it - they also haven't got promoted or been succesful in any jobs they applied for- they couldn't see the connexion!

I like the idea of blogging live, all depends on holtels and free wifi, I think they wanted 320 per day where i was - what a rip off!

Hi Denise,
I have at least 2 US conferences in 2012 (as well as 3 or 4 others, sometimes several more) - so I doubt I'll justify time to get to Guillebeau's event, although I've plugged myself into the mailing list.
Two thoughts - most good conferences, most of the value is in the less formal activities - take a look at Johnnie Moore and "open-space" activities and also "Anecdote".
Also - go one better, if you have the iPad on-line why not blog notes directly.
Take care.

I think that option 2 would be the most likely to grab my interest on a bookshelf. It would make me wonder what it's all about.

I like the first best - it's simplest - at least from looking at it as an image on the blog. But the back looks very complicated, too many words! Prefer the back from option 2 (perhaps with picture of Emma and explaining who she is)

Again, it may be the effect of the small image, or it may be an effect you want, but at first glance it seems to read Fat Fantastic on the first cover.

Good luck!

Hi Denise - I prefer option 1 and my reactions to the other two were exactly what I then read as your comments :-) Whatever you go for, many many congratulations! Cx

Hi Denise,

The option I think looks best is option 3. I know this is your least favourite, but I think it really shows how much weight you've lost, as it shows the whole of you & the picture of you is 'fantastic', which reflects the title. Your bust looks fine in that picture & the camera angle shows off your new figure! The back cover of option one is good, as it shows Emma (who isn't the main focus, but has a strong influence in your book) & the big pair of trousers that would fit you both in!

Just my opinion, hope it helps
