April 2009
A big welcome to the 104 people who subscribed in March, my subscriber total is now 1724 and I'm very pleased to have you all here. I aim to make this newsletter of interest and if there's something you would like me to write about please let me know.
March and now April have been so very busy, hence the delay in sending out this months issue. I realised in early March that I was becoming a bit overwhelmed with how much I had going on in my life - busy with clients, consultancy, writing and publishing my book, planning for my holiday and trying to find snippits of time for family, friends and non work stuff I wanted to do for me, which has been side lined for months. So I took the decision not to exhibit at the One Life Show. Whilst I'd paid out the money for the stand, it was going to cost more than that figure again for travel, accomodation and all the incidentals they don't tell you about when you book - £99 for lighting!
Amazing People is only me, with part time office support and outsourcing of some tasks. People choose to work with me because of the personal attention they get. I've always done my best to see clients promptly but with the amount of work this hasn't been possible. I stopped even having short enquiry calls the week before I went on holiday and the current situation is that it is about 2 weeks before people are getting an appointment so there is a need to plan. I've realised that talking with clients for 10 hours on a day - which I've done more than once is not good for me - I need some time to relax as well! |

Quote
of the Month |
"Every now and then go away, have a little relaxation, for when you come back to your work your judgment will be surer. Go some distance away because then the work appears smaller and more of it can be taken in at a glance and a lack of harmony and proportion is more readily seen."
Leonardo Di Vinci

| My holiday in Egypt
I really needed time away, and I found the quote by Leonardo Di Vinci pertinent. My last 3 holidays have been backpacking, staying in simple hotels and generally roughing it. After doing similar around Southern India last Christmas I decided I wanted a change and have some luxury which I certainly achieved this year. We decided to go to Egypt and spent 3 nights in Cairo, we could see a pyramid from our bedroom and also from the swimming pool, flew down to Aswan and then flew on to Abu Simbel, then had a 6 night cruise before spending time at Luxor at the famous Winter Palace Hotel where Agatha Christie stayed. It was so nice to be looked after and I think this has spoiled me for back packing in the future. If you would like to read more about my holiday it is available from my personal web site.
In this months issue:
I'll be sending out the May issue in a couple of weeks and look forward to talking with you then,
Kindest
regards,

Article: How to get a job in a recession - Daily tasks (excerpt from the forthcoming book - How to get a job in a recession)
|
Introduction
I want you to follow a structured and organised approach to your job search, to make best use of your time and keep you focused. You need to treat your job search
like a marketing campaign where the product is you and everything you do gets you closer to your desired result, a job.
Each day you will undertake certain activities – it’s important that you do these, and review your progress at the end of each day. It may take some time before you get a job offer, but as you complete each action you can celebrate a mini success, completing the tasks means you haven’t just sat back and given up.
The review stage is important. If, when you talk with people, they aren’t clear on what sort of job you are looking for, revise what you say. If you are not getting shortlisted, review your CV and the way you complete application forms. As part of your review you should ask yourself:
- Have I followed the advice in this book?
- Do I need to discuss my approach with a job search buddy
- or a job search coach/ career counsellor?
Am I actually doing the steps I should do each day and not just reading what to do?It’s not enough to just read this book, you need to do the activities and keep doing them.Even in a booming economy some people give up on looking for a new job because it’s hard work. But if you are committed, and follow the steps … Kim and Lindsay were highly determined and both started new jobs within 2 months of working through this programme.

Review of the book:
"Denise's informative, friendly and easy to read style means this book isn't heavy going but manages to cram in more information, hints and tips than you thought possible in a book of this size.
It is clear from the start, Denise is speaking from years of experience and shares this with the reader. From reading this book, I understood more about the job hunting/recruitment process and what I needed to do to be ahead of the game than I ever got from speaking to friends, family and reading articles on the web.
This book is an investment in your future. However, buying the book will not get you a new job, it isn't magic! Denise makes it clear that job hunting takes effort and although the requirements on you are clear as you read the book, she can't do the work for you!
Having read the book as soon as it arrived in the post, it is now a key reference book which I can 'dip into and out of' as I work my way thorough the different recruitment stages. I am sure I will be referring to this 'manual' for many years to come. "
