Love Your Job - Helping you to love your job or to find a job you do love

April 2010

Happy Easter, I hope you have had a lovely break. It might have been a bit cold but its been bright and dry these past couple of days, at least here in Tewkesbury.

I've had a lot of clients this month and my diary is pretty full for the next 3 weeks. A lot of clients travel 100+ miles to work with me and I see these starting between 11 and 1 and they come for 3 - 4 hour sessions so a large chunk of each day is booked well in advance. It's easier to fit in shorter sessions early or late in the day.

It's not just client work, I've become a director of Zoom Interviews and am undertaking development work at the moment. As part of the development work I'd really appreciate it if you would complete a very short questionnaire. Here's the link.

One thing I plan to start doing again is to have regular video/power point tips. I've done these in the past and hope to start them up in the next few weeks. I'll be sending you a short email in between newsletters to let you know. If you have a question you would like me to answer send it to me and I'll do my best to cover it.

I'm now entering week 26 of my diet and fitness campaign, on the scales it has been a slow week and i've only lost 4lb, but that's just one measure. It's been more satisfying to feel that clothes are loose on me and my flexibility and strength are so much more improved. I never cease to be amazed at what I can do in the gym! My new programme includes alternate lunges with 6kg in each hand, and push ups and the jack knife!

Quote of the Month

Set me a task in which I can put something of myself, and it is a task no longer; it is joy; it is art.

Bliss Carmen

In this months issue:

Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you would like to discuss working with me or if you have any suggestions for my newsletter.

I look forward to talking to you again next time.

Kindest regards,

p.s I now have 2179 subscribers as of today, and I'm really pleased to have you all here. I write this newsletter to be interesting, so do get in touch with any ideas for future issues.

Article 1: The default option (or the perils of being comfortable

I don't like my internet provider, I know there is something better out there and I get very frustrated whenever I need to talk with them, thankfully hardly ever.

So why do I stay? Like most things, it's a faff to move and the pain and hassle of moving outweighs the pain of staying so I tell myself that they are an ok supplier until the next time something goes wrong.

It's like this with many people who stay in jobs they don't like. If they had a bullying boss or were filled with dread at the thought of going to work each day you would think looking for a new job would be top priority.  But what often happens is that people in that situation have had their self confidence chipped away and  find it hard to believe that anyone else will want them or that they can be convincing at interview.  When I work with a client who has been treated in such a way, part of what I do focuses on increasing and improving their self confidence, helping them to recognise all their strengths and positive qualities and to undo some of the negative impact brought on by others.

I ask clients to rate how satisfied they are with their job. When they are as low as 2 or 3 it's imperative that they make a change, but some have been in this limbo state for some time, one client for 3 years, several for a couple of years. They knew they needed to change, were trying to do it on their own and weren't succeeding. Once we work together they realise that if they had started back when they first felt uncomfortable they would probably already be in their new job, but we can't change the past and the time was probably not right for them back then, although on reflection ...

For other people it's not that bad but they don't really enjoy being an accountant/oil engineer/ marketing exec/ PR consultant. But when I then ask them to rate how they feel it's about 5 out of 10.  It's ok, it's just about bearable but they wonder ... is there something better out there? and almost always there is.  You can relate this to why people stay in an unhappy relationship for so long, and we probably spend more time at work than with our partner.

It is hard work changing careers, but it is also a great deal of fun and incredibly satisfying. My clients sometimes make minor changes and use the information they have discovered on themselves to tweak their current job to make it more satisfying.  Others will make radical changes - lawyer to golf pro; nurse to yacht chef; Finance director to student of archaeology, Property manager to social worker and much more.

I gave up a safe job as Assistant Director with Royal Mail for the insecurity, and a lot less money in setting up my own business. I did it as I wanted to follow my passion and the people I work with, and probably readers of this newsletter know that I live and breathe helping others to be successful in career discovery or job search.

So why not take some time today to think if you are following the default option and you may also like to think about what it will be like for you if you continue without making any changes.

If you would like to discuss this with me, please get in touch.

3 months on - are you on track??

The months go by and we are now just over 3 months since we set our New Year resolutions. So how are you doing?

This might be a good week to review where you are up to:

  • Did you want to make changes?
  • How you you doing?
  • What's getting in the way?
  • Is there any help you need - externally or internally?

Don't beat yourself up if things haven't gone as well as you had planned but take stock and have a think about ho you can tweak things to get to where you want. Think about how great you can feel in 3 months time when people ask you how you are doing and you can let everyone know about how far you have come.

If you think I my be able to help, please let me know.

Article 2: The Myers Briggs Type Indicator

I regularly use the MBTI with my career coaching clients and was trained to use it over 25 years ago. It’s an interesting assessment to help people learn more about themselves.

It was featured on a Radio 4 show a few days ago ‘How Myers-Briggs Conquered the Office’ and the programme was presented by Mariella Frostrup. You can access the programme via this link until 9pm today, Tuesday.

I’ve been reading comments from MBTI practitioners and many people are surprised of the critical comments on the radio show. This doesn’t surprise me, it’s always a better story online to pick up on the negative comments, but it does help to spread the word.

A couple of things I picked up on – there were loads more, but it’s Easter Sunday so I wasn’t making lots of notes as I prepared for a large lunch.

Negative comments included that you can fake your answers and so it is not an accurate assessment and it is a blunt instrument and the results end up with people being ‘either/or’, so you could be either an extravert or an introvert as there are many differences between people that are e.g. Introvert.

I mainly use the MBTI Step 2 with my clients that goes into much more detail so I can have several clients who come out as Introvert but their individual profiles are very different. When we move into Step 2 there are 5 facets under Extravert or Introvert.

  • Initiating – Receiving
  • Expressive – Contained
  • Gregarious – Intimate
  • Active – Reflective
  • Enthusiastic – Quiet

So there are many combinations. People who are Introvert are more likely to be Receiving (meaning more reserved), Contained (which is being more private), Intimate (preferring one to one than larger groups), Reflective (preferring to communicate more in writing and with time for reflection) and Quiet (preferring to be out of the limelight).

But we don’t all measure up fully like this, for example, I am an introvert overall, but one who is not the contained and private person but the person who is easier to get to know and more likely to reveal personal information, (Expressive).

The MBTI is also used for personal development, not for recruitment, and in a one to one feedback discussion you would be helped to understand the ‘real you’ rather than the person you have learnt to be to fit in at work.

I'm considering having a video presentation on Extravert-Introvert for my subscribers so let me know if this interests you.

Amazing People is now on Face Book

Face Book image I’ve set up a business page on Face Book. I’ve got my personal Face Book account, but thought it was time to separate business from personal stuff. This has been really new to me – learning how to do it, and thinking what I can do to be helpful for my ‘fans.' I'm now at 89 fans and when I reach 100 fans one person will get a signed copy of one of my books.

Interview Coaching Feedback - Paul was successful!

‘I am writing to give you some extremely positive feedback following the Interview Training that we conducted by phone 3 weeks ago.

I am pleased to say that during the week following the training I successfully attended 5 interviews with 2 companies and was offered both jobs !! Exhausting but thrilling too. I truly feel that the interview preparation I undertook with you was the defining factor as I approached each session thoroughly prepared and with anticipation.

Whilst I am sure that much comes down to experience, CV and skill set I know that the prep I did with you set me apart and really was the difference. Thank you again for the training, money extremely well spent as far as myself and my family are concerned. Brilliant.

Paul, Senior Manager.
