Love Your Job - Helping you to love your job or to find a job you do love

July 2008

I'm delighted to get in touch with you again, and sorry this is a bit late, I've been ill, still am, and it's certainly challenging to communicate with clients when you have lost your voice. I'm taking great care of myself and have appreciated clients waiting for my voice to come back.

Writing this newsletter and looking through my diary at everything I did in June it's probably no wonder that I've become ill - and it's a wake up call to me to make sure not to do too much.

Alongside all my wonderful clients I've also spent 2 days on DJ training with DJ Tanz of the DJ Academy. I love music and had such fun, and it certainly is making me listen to music in a different way.

I get a lot of enquiries, but I try to be careful that there's a good fit. Over this past month I was approached by someone who wanted me to write his presentation for him to use at his assessment centre - I will help people to put a great presentation together but I work with the clients material, I don't write things for the person. This person cheekily wanted me to do it for them - I obviously declined. I've also had my first non payer - he said he'd forgotten his cheque book so I said he could pay online when he got home, but he never did. This is disaapointing and now means I will ask for money at the start of a session.

A lot of people are getting concerned about their career - more people are being made redundant and it can cause feelings of uncertainty. I'm working with a senior manager from a construction company who loves her job but she is being made redundant and all other construction companies are in a similar position so she is looking for something different and following the Gold Career Programme. I've written an article on this.

I offer many different assessments, particularly focused on those most useful when people seek to change careers, but some clients seek to work with me for personal development. They seek greater self understanding to help them be more effective in their job. I've been using the 16PF with people, but am now recommending Saville's Wave which is incredibly powerful and clients love it. .

I love to work with my younger clients and in June worked with Lauren, Toni and Lizzie, helping them all to understand themselves better to make the right education choices for them. It's too easy for young people to go to University without thinking through if it is the right thing for them to do at this time so it's well worth putting a bit of effort in to make sure the right decsion is made.

Quote of the Month

"Most of us go to our graves with our music still inside of us.~Oliver Wendell Holmes

In this months issue you can read:

I hope you enjoy reading this.  Do get in touch if you think I can help in any way, and I look forward to talking to you again next month.

Kindest regards,

Article 1: The threat of redundancy

More possibilities of redundancy, how safe is your job? It might not be directly to do with your industry, but the knock on effects could make things less secure. You could do nothing and wait and see if the redundancy notice appears, or start giving it some though now.

If jobs are to go, staff may get an outplacement package and this can be really helpful. I’m currently working with a company offering a supportive one to one service to help the staff who have been made redundant move on from the redundancy with a great CV, support to find a new job and interview training. Not everyone is so lucky. Some people get nothing, and others may have a half day group programme which is really just playing lip service to supporting staff.

No one is secure in their jobs any more. We never know what might happen so here are a few tips to ensure you are marketable:

  • If you enjoy your work and want to continue on this sort of work make sure that you do a good job so if some staff have to go they are more likely to keep you. It is not just doing a good job but letting other people know you are doing a good job.

  • If you enjoy your work, keep your skills up to date.  Don’t just rely on previous experience but seek out training and other ways to develop yourself.

  • When you need to apply for jobs you will want to have examples of what you have achieved to enhance your application so make a note of new things you have done and problems you have overcome and keep this list updated.

  • Think through where you want your career to be in the future- 2,5,10 years on and look for how to develop yourself for the future so you know what would be a good next step to aim for rather than to be willing to take whatever you can get.

  • Use the information to create a CV and keep it updated so it is ready.

And beyond our career we can work towards reducing our debt by being more careful with money.

Now may be the time to talk with a career psychologist, if I can be of help please let me know

I hope this doesn’t happen to you, but if it does do ask your company about outplacement support.

Featured Service: Ask a question

Sometimes you seek some advice and don't want to book a one hour session with Denise, this is when you may like to choose the Ask a question service - pose your question and get an email response - i'm assuming the question will be up to half a side of A4 and take me about 15 minutes to read and reply, and for this I'll charge £20.

Obviously for a longer and more complex question I'll need to charge more.

To sety this up you just need to send your question, I'll confirm how much it will be and you can make payment via the links on the client page.

Article 2: Saville's Wave

I offer many different assessments, and have just added details of a new one - Saville Consulting Wave this is a personality questionnaire which is quickly becoming the assessment of choice in recruitment and personal development.

I don’t train to use every psychometric assessment that comes on to the market place and make sure that what I do offer is reliable, valid and is going to be useful for the people that I work with.

This is the one I now recommend to my business clients and it is great for an in-depth personal assessment, particularly to help you understand yourself before an in-depth interview.

It was developed by Professor Peter Saville who was the originator of SHL’s OPQ ®. The assessment can assess talent and motive and the results can be compared to organisational competences.

The self report assessment takes approximately 35 minutes to complete. You then receive an in-depth discussion alongside a Professional Styles Report. There is an option for two additional reports – Types Report and Entrepreneurial Potential Report.

I’ve got a page about it on my website and you can contact me for further information.
