The Watson Glaser is a test of critical thinking and is frequently used at part of an assessment centre.
The Watson Glaser differs from other critical reasoning tests as there are 5 different types of test all contained within the assessment:
-
The first one measures Inference – the conclusion you can draw from certain facts. We can infer things and these may be true, or not. The answer is not always black or white. Whilst some answers will be clear, others will be less so and for this test there is a 5 point scale: True, partly true, partly false and false with a middle option of insufficient data.
-
The second test is Recognition of Assumptions and from a statement you need to say whether an assumption is true or false.
-
The third test is concerned with Deduction, can you draw a conclusion, or not, based on your reading of a statement.
-
Test four is concerned with Interpretation and asks you to again look at a paragraph and interpret the data and say whether you can draw a conclusion from it.
-
The final test is concerned with Evaluation of Arguments. You read the statement, look at the proposed argument and make a judgement, stating if this judgement is strong or weak.
This particular test is sometimes timed, at other times you can continue till you finish.
