As you get ready for the break from work, and for many this will be for a couple of weeks, I’d like you to think about taking a holiday from technology.
Rosabeth Moss Kanter wrote a great article in the Harvard Business Review – The Imperfect balance between work and life. She writes that we shouldn’t strive for perfection and it’s ok to let things slip. She says that we should delegate and not try to do everything ourselves. We can pay people to do the things we don’t want to do.
We spend so much time switched on and out of balance. Can you join me in a switch off?

  • We don’t need to spend so much time online, constantly checking on FaceBook and telling the world what we are up to via Twitter.
  • We don’t need to respond so quickly to emails.
  • At evenings and weekends, and over these Christmas holidays we should switch off our smart phones and concentrate instead on the people we are with.
  • When we are relaxing in the evening we shouldn’t need to check emails, switch them off till the next day.

If we want to get hold of someone we should phone their landline if they have one and not expect an immediate reply.
We all need time to recharge, I’m now going ‘off grid’ for 2 ½ weeks. But I have prepared some blog posts in advance!
Going on holiday should be a chance to relax and recharge.
This will give me time to think, so I’ll have a notebook and pen in case I get inspiration but mainly I want to be able to enjoy new surroundings, chat and read lowbrow books.
Happy Christmas
