Job Search - filling in application forms

Clients will send me their applications to review. Thought it might be helpful to share some feedback I sent to a client last week.

In an application form there are a number of straightforward questions – details on education and career history, so once you have collated this information it is straightforward to fill in forms, although the order and slight details might change. That’s why you keep a file with all the details you need in it.

There is also the space to write a motivational response – why you want the job.

I encourage people to look at the job spec, to pick out (at least) the essential criteria and to write a detailed paragraph on each.

There is also a need to be clear on why you want the job. You need to write something here to make you stand out and to demonstrate your motivation for applying. This would, when applying for a job with a CV, be included in your covering letter.

These questions might help:

What is it that excites you about the job? What makes you want to apply for this job?

What makes you stand out from other applicants?

Why this particular company? (If you are applying for work at a charity, why this one and not another one)
